What is Income Protection?

Unum Income Protection Insurance helps you when you can't work. You get it from your employer.

In a nutshell, Income Protection protects your income. If you’re off work long-term because of illness or injury, Income Protection replaces a significant portion of your monthly pay cheque. How long the cover lasts and how much of your salary you receive will depend on your work's policy.

Why do I need it?

With 11% of people in their working life having to take 6 months or more off work due to illness or injury*, it’s worth thinking about.

It doesn’t replace your full salary, but certainly more than if you were just relying on State benefits. You see on average, if you’re off work ill or injured, your company is only likely to keep paying your salary for 6 months, and soon that won’t leave much to get by on.

How do I get it?

The easiest way to get Income Protection is through your employer.

A policy costs your employer, on average, only 1/3rd of what it would cost if you bought it yourself. And, unlike an individual policy, if you have an existing illness or injury (we call these pre-existing conditions), in most cases, you’ll be covered.

Approaching your employer about Income Protection isn’t as scary as it sounds. In fact, in a recent survey*, 48% of employers said ‘employee requests’ were one of the top 5 factors influencing the introduction of new employee benefits. So it’s worth asking the question. Take a look at how you can raise the subject.
