Specialist employee benefits provider, Unum UK, has set a new company record paying £516 million in Group Protection claims in 2024 – equivalent to nearly £10 million every week. This achievement comes as Unum now insures 2.8 million people, a 44% increase over the past five years. Despite this substantial growth, Unum has maintained its outstanding rehabilitation success rate of 97% for individuals supported by a Group Income Protection policy, for the second consecutive year.
Paula Coffey, Director of Claims, Rehab and Medical Services, commented: “Our continued success in helping workers return to work or reach an agreed outcome underscores our unwavering commitment to workplace wellbeing. By consistently going beyond the claim, we provide unparalleled support at every stage of an individual’s health journey – prevention, intervention, and protection – creating healthier and more resilient workforces.”
In 2024, Unum's Help@hand service saw over 290,000 interactions, including clinical appointments, proactive self-help content, 360 wellbeing scores and BenefitHub savings and discounts. This digital innovation empowers individuals to proactively take charge of their health and wellbeing.
“Our latest claims and vocational rehabilitation data reveal the profound impact of workplace protection,” Paula continued. “Mental health-related conditions accounted for 42% of rehabilitation referrals, while cancer was the most common reason for claims across all our insurance products. These serious issues demand high-quality support, which is exactly what we provide.”
Looking ahead, Unum is committed to expanding the reach of its comprehensive support. “We want more businesses and employees to benefit from our protection products,” Paula added. “That's why we're continually investing in our claims and rehabilitation services to meet the evolving needs of modern workforces.”
At the end of 2024, Unum launched its employer portal, featuring online claims tracking and rehabilitation referral capabilities. Adoption has been swift, with 82% of claims from employers currently submitted and processed online, along with 57% of absence referrals.1
“Unum is dedicated to helping people manage their health and wellbeing with personalised support – never a one-size-fits-all solution,” Paula concluded. “By proactively addressing employee health and wellbeing and supporting their return to work, we are safeguarding the future success and resilience of businesses across the UK.”
