What are non-medical limits (also known as free cover limits or automatic acceptance limits)?

A non-medical limit, is the maximum amount of insurance cover that members can receive without providing information about their health and lifestyle. This limit helps streamline the onboarding and quote process by automatically accepting cover up to a certain amount, making it quicker and easier for most employees to get insured.

What increases have been applied to Unum’s standard non-medical limits?

The new limits apply to all Group Income Protection and Group Life quotes from 17 April 2025 (including quotes on UnumOnline) and have been simplified to make it easier to communicate to customers, so there is now a set amount based on the number of members included in the scheme. The table below outlines the enhanced limits:

–––

Group Income Protection (per annum)
Group Life (lump sum)
3-24£80,0003-29£650,000
25-34£100,00030-49£1,000,000
35-49£120,00050-149£1,500,000
50-99£150,000150-299£1,800,000
100+£180,000300+£2,000,000

Why have we made these changes?

As part of our ongoing reviews of our products and services to ensure they meet customer needs, the increased limits will now better align with the market and consider recent wage growth and inflation. The higher standard limits will also help in reducing administration for customers, with less employees requiring medical underwriting.
