Our community engagement activities in the UK centre on three key areas:
We support organisations that provide education for all young people within our local communities to prepare the future workforce.
We equip our employees to make a positive impact through mentoring relationships and pro-bono/skill sharing activities.
We educate and engage our workforce on key societal issues within our communities. This includes supporting organisations that positively impact healthier, inclusive and sustainable places to live and work in a fair and equitable society that has room for everyone to thrive.
Climate change is widely reported as one of the biggest challenges of our time. We aim to reduce our environmental impact whilst minimising the impact of environmental issues on our business. We support our customers and suppliers as they do the same.
At Unum, we are:
As part of our commitment to reduce our impact on the environment, Unum UK offsets the entirety of our reported carbon emissions in partnership with Ecologi. The projects we support are gold standard accredited and incorporate both carbon avoidance and removal. We understand that offsetting is not the answer to the climate crisis, however we are dedicated to reducing our impact whilst we work to reduce our emissions.
In addition to offsetting, we are actively participating in reafforestation efforts worldwide. We actively work to embed Ecologi into business process to continue these efforts, having planted over 100,000 trees to date.
Unum UK also encourages our staff to be mindful about the environment and their own carbon footprints. As part of this, we introduced an optional benefit with Ecologi to our annual flexible benefits window. This allows employees to make either single or monthly donations to offset their carbon footprint by funding global climate projects and planting trees.
Keep up to date with our progress below.
We are dedicated to supporting local environments and wildlife. We have completed multiple onsite initiatives to improve our onsite biodiversity across our offices.
This includes the installation in the grounds of our Dorking Head Office two onsite beehives managed by Surrey Bees, plus wildflower meadow planting, annual participation in No Mow May and supporting local organisations with hedgerow and tree projects. We continue to identify new ways to further our efforts both onsite and offsite.
